The Art of Toquilla Straw
Our hats are meticulously handwoven by skilled artisans in the cantons surrounding Cuenca, with a special focus on the parish of Ricaurte. Often, the women of these communities are entrusted with this delicate craft, allowing them to contribute to their households while preserving a centuries-old local tradition. Before the weaving begins, the stems and buds undergo a rigorous preparation process—preselection, cooking, drying, and smoking. Depending on the fineness of the strands, the size of the brim, and the season, weaving a single hat can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months. This unwavering dedication ensures that each piece is a unique work of art.
